Philippe Dodard: Multi-Disciplined Haitian Artist
Editor’s Note: I first met Philippe Dodard in 2023 at an exhibition of his work at Carl-Philippe Juste’s gallery, the Iris PhotoCollective (IPC) in Miami’s Little Haiti.
Born in Haiti in 1954, PHILIPPE DODARD studied at the National School of Arts in Port-au-Prince and at the École international de Bordeaux, France.
Known for his synthesis of traditional Haitian pictorial expressions and contemporary articulations, Dodard paints the Caribbean in a multiplicity of mediums from canvas to wood, stone, and, iron. His textured, layered public works often incorporate created objects rendering the mural a force of attraction fusing the environment with a serene vitality.
Pegged to Haitian traditions and the symbolisms that have cohabited in the island’s rich history, and contemporary global interconnexions, the works of Dodard stand as a unique approach in Caribbean aesthetics.

Dodard’s artwork has evolved to include large sculptures, fine ironworks, and jewelry designs. His paintings and drawings have inspired filmmaker Jonathan Demme and fashion designer Donna Karan. Dodard and Karan had a joint exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami.
