Commentary in the form of reviews, constructive criticism, video interviews, and profiles, is published on the ArtSpeak website on a continuous basis, as soon as the material is ready for publication. The best material is published seasonally in an e-Magazine, which can be viewed on iPads and iPhones. The inaugural e-Magazine was published in August, 2015. Eighteen editions have been published to date. The complimentary ArtSpeak e-Magazine App is available through the Apple APP Store — just search for “ArtSpeak Miami.”

I am pleased to welcome you to ArtSpeak, an arts publication platform sponsored by the FIU Lee Caplin School of Journalism & Media in FIU’s College of Communication, Architecture + the Arts,
ArtSpeak is offered as a website, where we continuously publish content about all art disciplines whenever it is ready for publication, and as an e-Magazine that can be read on iPads and iPhones. Contributors to ArtSpeak (FIU students, faculty and people of interest) focus on arts activities outside of the immediate FIU community.
THE ORIGINS OF ARTSPEAK
In 1985, I co-founded Provincetown Arts magazine to celebrate the Outer Cape Cod art community, which has supported many of America’s best known artists, writers, and architects since 1899. Though today I am in a mostly ceremonial role as “Publisher Emeritus,” Provincetown Arts will publish its 38th annual issue in July, 2023.
In 1989, I started making large scale portraits (i.e. 40 x 60 inches) of participants in the Provincetown art community. I have made over 400 portraits in this series.
In 2001, my wife and I bought a condo in the Miami Beach area and became snowbirds. In 2012, we decided to live year-round in South Florida, and I started to explore the possibilities for creating a high-quality arts publication platform for the Miami area that would cover all art disciplines.
In 2013, I started making large-scale portraits of people in the arts with Miami connections. My first subject was Cuban-American Miami-raised poet Richard Blanco, who had just written and read a new poem at President Obama’s inauguration. I told Richard about my dream for a Miami arts publication, and he suggested that I contact his friend and collaborator, artist John Bailley, who teaches at Florida International University (FIU).
John started me down a path that ultimately led to Brian Schriner, Dean of FIU’s College of Communication, Architecture + the Arts (CARTA). Dean Schriner whole-heartedly embraced the general concept of an arts publication platform, which was already articulated in CARTA 20/20, a statement of CARTA’s mission, values, goals and strategies through the year 2020.
Planning for the magazine platform began in 2014, and on May 1, 2015, working with a great team of students, faculty, and outside professionals, we launched the ArtSpeak website.
I hope what you read, hear and see in ArtSpeak adds value to your appreciation of the arts in Miami and South Florida.
