“Tinkerbell is. . . .” 1990. 9 x 14 inches. Mixed-media on canvas. Raymond Elman.

RAYMOND ELMAN (b.1945) is a lifelong artist.  For 20 years he made only abstract art.  He started making portraits when his son was born in 1989.  Most of the portraits document Elman’s relationships with people in the arts across all art disciplines. He is also the co-founder of Provincetown Arts magazine, and the founding editor-in-chief of ArtSpeak (https://artspeak.fiu.edu/).  Elman made a home in the Outer Cape Cod art community — Provincetown, Truro, Wellfleet — from 1970 to 2012.  When his son, Evan, was born in 1989, someone said, “Well, I guess Tinkerbell is dead” — meaning that Elman’s freewheeling lifestyle was over, and he would have to get serious about supporting his family.
