Artist Romero Britto: A Miami Success Story
ROMERO BRITTO was born in Recife, Brazil in 1963. Growing up with his seven siblings in a poor community, he painted images on scraps of cardboard and newspaper. Britto works in several mediums — he is a painter, sculptor, Neo-pop artist, and printmaker. Britto feels that art is what kept him sane through dark periods of his childhood– always focusing on bright colors and positive aspects of life. His art uses vibrant colors and bold patterns which reflect elements of cubism, pop art, and graffiti. In 1988, Britto moved to Miami and emerged as an international artist. In 1989, his work caught the attention of Michel Roux, founder of Absolute Vodka’s “Absolutions Art” advertising campaign, who asked Britto to transform the appearance of an Absolute bottle for an ad campaign that would be seen by millions all over the world. Britto later worked on advertising campaigns for Movado, Enrico Coveri, Disney, BMW, Pepsi, the United Nations, and Royal Caribbean Cruises. Britto currently owns a gallery in Miami, but his work can be seen all over the world. Britto has published works through Simon & Schuster and Rizzoli. Some of his public installation locations include Hyde Park in London, the Cirque du Soleil at Super Bowl XLI, the John F. Kennedy Airport in New York, and the O2 Dome in Berlin. He dedicates a lot of his time and talent to international organizations such as St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, the American Red Cross, and Best Buddies International. He has been a significant contributor to protecting and preserving the Brazilian Rainforest, assisting the ill, funding AIDS research, and much more. Through Britto’s community initiatives, he aims to use his talent and knowledge to help those less fortunate. Britto has said, “As an artist, I feel lucky to have been given the gift of creativity so that I may share my vision of a better world. I will never forget what it was like to be poor and that is why it is so important to me that my work be accessible to all people.”
