CAMERON BASDEN is a director, educator, répétiteur, writer and former professional ballerina who brings passion and spirit to her art as well as a keen sense of organization and integrity to the projects she undertakes.  A former dancer with the Joffrey Ballet, she is currently the Managing Director of the Miami City Ballet School of the Miami City Ballet

 

 

Bibi Andrade & Myroslava Koliadenko Make a Superhero Comic Book About Ukraine

 

In this ArtSpeak video conversation we address BRIGITTE “BIBI” ANDRADE‘s desire to do something positive for the children of war-ravaged Ukraine. To that purpose, Andrade worked with 18 year-old Ukrainian refugee MYROSLAVA KOLIADENKO to create “T-Superheroes,” a comic book about the invasion of Ukraine.

 

 

Maria Todaro: A Lifetime in Opera

 

MARIA TODARO assumed the role of General Director of the Florida Grand Opera (“FGO”) in Fall 2023 with thirty years of international experience as an arts administrator and entrepreneur, stage director, conductor, librettist, and operatic mezzo-soprano under her belt.

In Memoriam: Dr. Enid Curtis Pinkney

 

DR. ENID CURTIS PINKNEY (1931-2024) passed away on July 18, 2024 at the age of 92. She will be most remembered for saving the Hampton House in Brownsville from the Miami wrecking ball, and raising the funds to restore it to National Historic Registry standards. She was the founder of the Historic Hampton House Museum.

 

 

Designer Barbara Hulanicki — The Queen of Biba

 

Designer BARBARA HULANICKI invented Biba in London during the swinging 1960s. Biba’s fans included The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Elton John, and Brigitte Bardot. In Miami Beach in the 1980s, Hulanicki reimagined several Art Deco hotels and “Woody’s” for the Stone’s Ronnie Woods.

 

 

Juliet Romeo: Filmmaker, Journalist, Activist

 

JULIET ROMEO is an award-winning writer and director known for her dedication to bold, authentic storytelling. A Brooklyn-born Trinidadian filmmaker based in South Florida, she brings her lived experiences as a disabled Caribbean woman into her work, creating narratives that explore identity, resilience, and social justice.

 

 

Julie K. Brown: In Pursuit of Justice

 

JULIE K. BROWN is an investigative journalist with the Miami Herald, best known for pursuing the sex trafficking story surrounding Jeffrey Epstein. She is the recipient of several awards including two George Polk Awards for Justice Reporting. Brown’s book, “Perversion of Justice,” based on her reporting on the Epstein case, was published by William Morrow and Company. The book served as the foundation for a limited series on HBO.

 

 

Mary Ellen Scherl: Art with Backstories

 

After a 17-year career as an Art Director at two premier advertising agencies, MARY ELLEN SCHERL transitioned from commercial art to fine art — sculpture, painting, installation photography, writing, and most recently filmmaking.
