JANET GOLDMAN is the Founder and Chairwoman Emeritus of Goldman Properties. She graduated from Emerson College with a degree in Theater Arts and taught public-school on the Upper West Side of New York City, eventually becoming the Dean of Women.

Goldman returned to school to study fashion design and illustration. In New York, she created, designed, and manufactured her own clothing line called Janet Goldman Designs which was launched at Henri Bendel with the support of Women’s Wear Daily.

In 1984, Janet Goldman Designs expanded to include jewelry and became FRAGMENTS, the renowned jewelry company, where her passion and vision created trends in the jewelry industry for over 30 years. During that time, she launched the careers of over 1,000 jewelry designers. She was named one of the top 50 most powerful figures in the jewelry industry by JCK Magazine.

Following the passing of her husband, Tony Goldman, in 2012, she became the Chairman of the Board of Goldman Properties. The family-led business stayed true to the company’s mission of transforming undervalued and declining historic districts into popular, thriving neighborhoods. Tony’s last big vision was to create the Wynwood Walls, which is now the largest, most iconic outdoor street art museum in the world, visited by millions of people annually. The Wynwood Walls Foundation sponsors Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami and provides scholarships for the Alvin Ailey dance program at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County.

There is a history of artists moving into undesirable neighborhoods, like SOHO in New York, seeking large open work spaces and low rents. Over time the artists attract the kind of people who buy art, followed by shops, restaurants, and boutique hotels. The next thing you know, the loft rents are increased beyond the artists’ ability to afford them, and the artists move on to a new bunch of warehouses. How do you address this issue?
